A Woman’s Guide to Dressing for a Concert

Concerts offer an awesome place to dance, but that’s tough to do if your duds are a dud and that’s all you can think about. We combined our fashion savvy with tips from StyleCaster, TickPick, and Darling Magazine to create a fashionable selection of creative concert outfits to suit various music genres and venues.

Concert Fashion Faux Pas

Before we dive into the suggestions, it’s imperative to make note of what not to do. Some of the biggest concert fashion faux pas show up again and again, and you’ll want to steer clear of them all. They include:
  • Trying too hard
  • Going overboard
  • Showing too much skin
  • Wearing clothes or shoes that won’t let you move
  • Being a walking cliché

Stadium

These venues are the strictest when it comes to entry; expect a bag check. Don’t pack or wear anything that could be seen as a weapon or potential concert disruptor unless you’re OK with having it confiscated.

Make sure your bag snaps or zips shut so it stays secure even if you’re jostled in a large crowd. If you think shorts or a skirt will make you feel too exposed or chilly, you can throw on a pair of snazzy tights to add a layer of protection without losing your outfit’s overall vibe. In fact, the tights could make your outfit even more attractive.

Outdoor

Dressing for the weather is a must for the outdoor crowd. In the sizzling summer, bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, and a stylish hat to protect your face. Concerts that start or extend after dark could get a tad chilly. Pack a leather or denim jacket that you can throw on if the temperatures dip. Either style works with any of the concert outfits we’ve suggested.

Nightclub or Bar

It’ll likely be dark inside these venues, and it’s probably going to be packed. For these reasons, you may want to leave your coat in the car. Jackets have a sneaky way of disappearing in a dimly lit, crowded nightclub. (Note: Some venues may have a coat check.) This is also another type of venue for which you may want to throw on a pair of tights over bare legs, and here you can go for a cool patterned pair or other stand-out style.
One final tip: Check out the venue’s website to see if it has any special regulations. Also note the venue’s suggested arrival time for large events. Otherwise, you should be set. You have your outfit, bag, and the rules, so it’s time to head out and have tons of fun. Just don’t forget your ticket!
