How to Care for Your Spyder Jacket

With the different weights in materials and capabilities to keep individuals warm, many skiers are able to sport their Spyder jackets both on and off the slopes. Spyder even has the entire family covered with its range of jacket options for babies to adults, and they are a great fit for beginners and professionals alike.

Knowing how to properly care for a Spyder jacket is as equally important as knowing the right size, especially if the winter gear is meant to last. If a consumer is looking for a new jacket, he or she may want to consider things like how often the item will be used and how dirty it might get before snagging that bright white coat over a darker color.

Steps to Take Care of a Spyder Jacket

Understanding the technologies used in Spyder jackets may be considered the first step involved with taking care of the piece of clothing. The company utilizes 10 different types of insulation, such as natural and synthetic, as well as other artificial materials in order to keep a skier’s body warm. Many jackets include the Spylon durable water repellent (DWR) finish or Spylon DWR finish. These technologies allow for skiers to stay dry. The Spylon jacket is able to maintain its 80 percent waterproofness after 20 washings, while the Spylon retains the same amount after 50 washes. While they may not require cleaning often, it is important to maintain the jacket’s DWR. If the outer fabric soaks up water, it may result in a breathability loss of up to 70 percent, which may cause a decrease in comfort.

How to Care for Your Spyder Jacket

Preparing a Spyder Jacket for Wash
First, make sure to carefully read and follow the label found on the inside of the Spyder jacket. This includes checking if the product is in fact machine washable. Remember that different styles or models may have different instructions.

There are a few precautionary steps to take to prep a jacket prior to throwing it in the wash. Some have a lot of pockets, so be sure to empty them and to zip up all zippers that are both on the inside and the outside of the garment before washing it. If there is a detachable hood or faux fur trim, remove it. Also, double-check that all Velcro found on any adjustable cuffs or other areas is closed and that all hook and latch strips have been fastened together. Finally, turn the jacket inside out.

Using the Right Products
Using an ordinary laundry detergent to clean a Spyder ski jacket can compromise the clothing’s DWR because of its water-attracting residues. Dirt is another reason why a coat might be soaking up water.

Spyder recommends using a cleaning product specifically designed for waterproof, breathable materials, such as the Nikwax Tech Wash. The safe, high-performance cleaner helps to maintain and revitalize the jacket’s DWR and breathability by removing any contaminants.

No matter what specialized detergent is used, including a Nikwax Down Wash for down-filled jackets, always follow the instructions found on the bottle. If using Tech Wash for a stubborn stain, apply undiluted cleaner with a sponge before washing in order to help treat the spot.

Washing Machine Use
Place the jacket into the washing machine before adding the right amount of waterproofing cleaner. If using a Tech Wash product for a top-load washing machine, set the cycle to Heavy and Warm and do not place more than six items in the machine at a time. For a front-load washing machine, don’t place more than two items in at a time, and set the cycle to Synthetics and Warm. Be sure not to add any other detergent or fabric softener to the cycle.

Drying a Spyder Jacket
Once it's been removed from the washer, it is best to air dry a Spyder jacket unless the care label specifically says it can be placed in the dryer. If using a clothesline or other type of laundry hanger, attach the jacket using clothespins.

To avoid any chance of the technical fabric melting, be wary of hanging a Spyder jacket near any type of heat source. Damage caused by accident, negligence, or improper care are not covered under the limited lifetime warranty of the jacket.
